Gervonta Davis vs Ricardo Nunez: Fight Night in Baltimore
On Saturday Night, Baltimore native Gervonta “Tank” Davis brought boxing back to the city of Baltimore when he took on Ricardo Nunez at the Royal Farms Arena.
Royal Farms Arena was sold out with an attendance of 14,686 people.
“Tonight we showed out. It’s amazing to fight in front of my hometown fans, my family. It’s an incredible feeling. I want to do it again,” Davis said.
Before the Dais vs Nunez fight, there was a moment of silence held for Pernell “Sweet Pea” Whitaker and Maxim Dadashev.
“First of all, I want to give my condolences to all the fighters we lost this week,” Davis said during his interview after the fight. “I’m grateful my opponent and I are unharmed. It’s a blessing.”
This fight drew out many big name celebrities such as Floyd Mayweather, Lil Baby, Ed Reed, Adrian Broner, and Chino Braxton.
WBA Super Featherweight Championship: Gervonta Davis vs Ricardo Nunez
Gervonta Davis defeated Ricardo Nunez by knockout in the 2nd round.
“I’m always ready. He wasn’t,” Davis said after the fight. “He wasn’t alert and I caught it with my third punch. I got him with a body shot. I caught him with a really nice shot. That was it.”
This got the excitement of all the fans in Royal Farms Arena. As soon as Davis got Nunez on the ropes, majority of the crowd rose to their feet and cheered with excitement.
Davis was the favorite in the fight and he proved he should be.
In the 1st round, Davis took his time and picked up on Nunez's tendencies. In the 2nd round, Davis attacked Nunez’s body until Nunez left his face open. That's when Davis took advantage and knocked Nunez out.
Nunez was a little upset that the referee called the fight. But with the week that boxing has had, there was no way you could’ve let that fight continue.
“I saw that he was defenseless and I had to stop it,” Referee Harvey Dock said.
“Tank punched him and he kept on coming. Nunez dropped his hands and he was unable to defend himself so I have to stop the fight.”
Davis made it clear after the fight that he wants to fight Tevin Farmer
“I have the WBA belt and I had the IBF. I want Farmer next,” Davis said. “Tevin Farmer fought tonight and that fight can be made.“
In the post fight press conference, Floyd Mayweather spoke very highly of Davis.
“Tank is an unbelievable fighter. He’s something special. This is a pay-per-view star.
“He has the charisma and the will to win,” Mayweather said. “He has a big heart and has a great team behind him.”
There were quite a few impressive fighters on the undercard.
Lightweights: Yuriorkis Gamboa vs Roman Martinez
Yuriorkis Gamboa defeated Roman Martinez by knockout in the 2nd round.
This was the final fight before the main event.
Both of the fighters are veterans from other countries. Gamboa is a 37 year old fighter from Guantanamo, Mexico and Martinez is a 36 year old fighter from Vega Baja, Puerto Rico.
Gamboa dominated the entire first round before the knockout in the early 2nd round.
People were skeptical on Gamboa because he is getting older and hadn’t won by knockout in 5 years.
But Gamboa definitely proved himself on Saturday and wants to fight Gervonta Davis next.
“I wanted a victory tonight so I can face Gervonta Davis next,” Gamboa said after the fight. “That’s what I want.”
Lightweights: Ladarius Miller vs Jezreel Corrales
Ladarius Miller defeated Jezreel Corrales in 10 rounds by unanimous decision.
This was the first bout on Showtime Championship Boxing.
There was a very controversial point deduction in the 10th round which ended up being the reason the fight was not a decision. After being warned several times about holding, Corrales lost a point. Corrales was thrown to the ground by Miller which is why many people were shocked that Corrales was deducted a point. But the point deduction was for the holding.
Judges scored the fight 96-93, 95-94 for Miller and 96-93 for Corrales.
Corrales still believes he won the fight.
“I’m not happy with the decision,” Corrales said. “I don’t think it was fair to give Miller the victory. The fans here in the arena told me I won the fight. I know I won the fight.”
Miller improved his record to 20-1 with this win. After the fight, Miller noted that he made the fight tougher on himself.
“He came out here and made it an ugly fight, but I got the job done,” Miller said. “I was just trying to go for the knockout. I think that if I would have settled down more it would have been better, but I was really trying to go for the knockout, and it made the fight a lot tougher than me.”
Super Lightweights: Malik Hawkins vs Johnathan Steele
Malik Hawkins defeated Johnathan Steele in 8 rounds by unanimous decision.
Hawkins was able to represent his city the right way.
In the 1st round, Steele came out landing some strong punches. But after the 1st round, Hawkins dominated the fight.
After the 8th and final round, the Baltimore crowd cheered with excitement as they knew Hawkins would be the winner of the fight.
Hawkins is a 23 year old rising star from Baltimore, Maryland and Steele is a 28 year old fighter who has been a professional for 7 years from Dallas, Texas.
Judges scored this fight 79-73, 79-73, and 78-74 in favor of Hawkins.
This fight improved Hawkins’ record to 16-0. Hawkins has proved to many people that he is a strong fighter and he will continue to make a name for himself.
Super Featherweights: Malik Warren vs Davonte McCowen
Malik Warren defeated Davonte McCowen by knockout in the 2nd round.
Warren is a 19 year old prospect from Baltimore, Maryland. Warrens opponent, Davonte McCowen, is a 25 year old fighter from Lancaster, California.
Warren was another fighter who was able to represent Baltimore in a good way.
This was Warren’s first professional fight and it was a very good way to start off his professional career. From the start of the fight, there was no question who the better fighter was.
With this being just the first professional fight for Warren, the sky's the limit.
Over the next few years, he will look to continue building his name on some big undercard fights. He is definitely a name to keep an eye on.

Dylan Price defeated Samuel Gutierrez in 8 rounds by unanimous decision.
Price is a 20 year old prospect from Sicklerville, New Jersey and Gutierrez is a 30 year old veteran from Saltillo, Mexico.
Judges scored the fight 79-73, 79-73, and 78-74 in favor of Price.
Price dominated the majority of the fight and improved his record to 9-0. He is a name to keep an eye out for. Price is a very young prospect with a ton of skilll.
Throughout the entire fight, he showed his quickness and how well conditioned he was. In the 8th round, he looked as fresh as he did in the first round.
