Former Ole Miss PF Carlos Curry is making the most out of his time at Northwest Mississippi CC

Coming out of high school, 6-foot-11 forward Carlos Curry was a three-star recruit and one of the top prospects in the state of Georgia. During his senior year, Curry committed to Ole Miss.

As a freshman, Curry sat out as a redshirt. During his sophomore year, Curry saw some time at forward for the Rebels. However, he never really got an opportunity to show what he can do. In 4.6 minutes per game, he averaged 0.7 points, 0.7 rebounds, and 0.2 steals per game.

What's great about Curry is the fact that he can stretch his game beyond the arc. Curry is tough inside, but can also really shoot the three pointer. It is rare to find guys who are 6-foot-11 with a shot like his. Many programs would do whatever they could to get somebody with Curry's skill set.

"I feel like it's very important," Curry said when asked how important his jump shot is in separating him from other big men in the country. "I feel like I'm a really great shooter and can knock down shots consistently and from that range, you don’t really see that for a guy of my size. So, I feel like it's definitely what makes me different"

Following the 2019-20 season, Curry announced he would be entering the transfer portal. He later announced he would be transferring to Northwest Mississippi Community College. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, their season was postponed for a few months. His first game with the Rangers will be on January 21st against East Mississippi Community College. His short amount of time at junior college is already having a positive effect on his as a player.

"Huge," Curry said when asked what impact his time in junior college has had in him developing. "It’s definitely been huge. It's really given me the time I need to really work on my game and build the confidence I needed to compete at a higher level."

Although we haven't seen Curry play in a game yet for Northwest Mississippi, he played in the JUCO All-American Showcase back in August. It was clear by the way he played that he is one of if not the best junior college big man in the country. He was scoring with ease, protecting the paint, finishing above the rim, and really stood out at this showcase. This helped him catch the eye of a ton of division one schools.

Recruiting this time around has been different for him. He has already been through the process once coming out of high school.

"Coming out of high school the recruiting process was different because schools were recruiting me based off my size and potential.," Curry said. "I feel like this go around it's different because schools are actually getting to see what I can do and what I have to offer for their program."

In August, the mid-major offers started pouring in for Curry. Schools like Old Dominion, East Tennessee State, Southern Utah, Kent State, and many more offered Curry following his dominant performances at the showcase. But it wasn't just mid-majors that Curry was getting the attention of. West Virginia, St. Johns, Houston, and Oregon State also offered him within a month following the showcase. Recently, Curry received his first Big Ten offers from Maryland. Lots of people are comparing his skill set to Jalen Smith who went to Maryland for two years before being picked 10th in the 2020 NBA Draft by the Phoenix Suns.

"West Virginia, Oregon State, Houston, Maryland, Utah, and a ton of mid-majors are the ones that have stood out the most," Curry said. "I would have to say WVU simply because they’ve been recruiting me for almost a year and I have a very good relationship with the staff. I would say Houston as well they’ve been recruiting me pretty hard and I share a good relationship with the staff."

Curry will probably wait until he has an opportunity to visit some of these schools before he decides to commit. Wherever Curry ends up committing will definitely be getting a steal.
